Young Endeavour Arrives at Port Adelaide

Aloft the mast and letting out the cheers of seasoned sailors, a triumphant group of youth sailed STS Young Endeavour into Port Adelaide Inner Harbour, this morning, completing a 12 day voyage from Esperance in Western Australia.

They’re the latest group to complete a voyage on the Royal Australian Navy’s only tall ship, and the smiles on their faces said it all…
…as did the tears rolling down the faces of awaiting parents – a mixture of pride and no doubt relief that they had made it safely.

The youth crew were aged from just 16-23 so for many it might have been their longest time ever away from home, but they were in the very safe and capable hands of Young Endeavour’s experienced Royal Australian Navy staff crew.

City of Port Adelaide Mayor Gary Johanson jumped on board to welcome the crew as they arrived, and presented the highest honour awarded to a participant – the Young Endeavour Medallion. For Voyage 20/16, the Young Endeavour Medallion was awarded to Andrew Bullers – a young man chosen for giving the most of himself, and in doing so, to others and exemplifying everything the Young Endeavour Youth Development Program is about.

“We always love to welcome the Young Endeavour,” said Mayor Gary Johanson. “The Navy operated youth program is such an enriching experience for young people – and it was great this time around to see local MP for Torrens, Dana Wortley’s son was also on board.

“Congratulations to everyone who made the journey.”

Young Endeavour Youth Scheme’s Executive Director Stephen Moss also flew in from Sydney to welcome the crew for their last port visit of the year – and gave thanks to the very close bunch of dedicated and hardworking staff.

STS Young Endeavour will remain in Port Adelaide until 2 January 2017 when a new crew of young Australians will embark and set sail across Bass Strait to Stanley, Tasmania.
