Alongside Trinity Wharf, Cairns.

1. Situation at 2130. 2. YOUNG ENDEAVOUR embarked 24 excited youth crew this afternoon inthe tropical city of Cairns. The youth crew have come from all corners of Australia and are looking forward to our voyage south to Mackay.3. Captain Phil introduced the staff crew for this voyage. They are: XO Dion, Nav Georige, Watch Officer Jordo, Engineer Eddie, Chef Bec and Watchleaders Rach, Brodie and Rags. It is great to welcome back Eddie as a permanent Engineer onboard, and also to have Rags come back for a couple of voyages after his recent break.4. With the introductions over, a strong wind and lack of suitable anchorage nearby assisted in the decision to remain alongside overnight. This means we can safely conduct our first climbs aloft in sheltered waters. Unfortunately for the fish, Bec’s delicious dinner has remained in everyones bellies and spirits are high.5. The first climb has just been completed and everyone has successfully climbed to the lower top platform and down the other side. Tonight everyone will learn about knots used onboard and have the opportunity to climb to the Topgallant Yard – the first yard (if you start counting from the top!)6. The youth crew have settled into the program well, and this promises to be an excellent voyage.YOUNG ENDEAVOUR FACT FILEYOUNG ENDEAVOUR has a suite of 10 sails that are normally used giving a sail area of just under 600 square metres. In light airs a large headsail called a Genoa or Drifter can be used. To use this sail the Jib is struck and the Drifter is set. The Drifter has an area of 141 square metres which is a considerable increase over the 81 square metre jib.QUOTEIt is not enough to know about Virtue, then, but we must endeavour to possess it, and to use it, or to take any other steps that may make us good” Aristotle 384-322 BC Yours AyePhil GadenLEUT
