Voyage to Hobart Commences

Hi Everyone, Welcome to Voyage 5/10 which is the second of our southern voyages for 2010. This voyage will see us depart Williamstown and over the next 11 days sail this magnificent ship across Bass Strait and down the very scenic East Coast of Tasmania completing this voyage in Hobart on the 5 March 2010. I would like to introduce the Team of Staff Crew that will facilitate this voyage of adventure: Captain – Gavin Dawe Sail Master – Dutchy Van Putton Navigator – Joel BOATSO – Tug Wilson Red Watch Leader – Adam Farley White Watch Leaders – Paul McDowell and Damien Munchenburg Blue Watch Leader – Andrew (Kenny) Callander Chef – Sammi Court Engineer – Lindsey Smith The voyage commenced at 1500 today when the new Youth Crew joined Young Endeavour at the Workshop Pier in Williamstown (Melbourne). It was a great day to join the shi because berthed with us at Workshop Pier was the extremely large “Fully Rigged Ship” Staad Amsterdam who had just arrived in Melbourne this morning, the South Australia Sail Training Ship One & All and the local Square Rigger Enterprise. Once gear was stowed, everyone mustered on deck for my welcome address and Staff Crew introductions. We farewelled loved ones, family and friends and then prepared to set sail. After a short delay due to an outbound Container Ship we cast-off lines and proceeded the short distance to our anchorage for the night in Hobson’s Bay. During this transit the Watch Leaders conducted a number of ‘ice breaker activities’ which was followed by ships tours. Dinner followed, with Chef Sammi demonstrated her excellent culinary skills. Once we had cleaned up from dinner, I had a bit of chat to the Youth Crew about what their voyage would entail and my expectations during the next eleven days. On Completion, Dutchy, as Sail Master gave his talk about some of the rules, regulations and safety aspects of Young Endeavour before giving a safety aloft brief and demonstration on how to climb the foremast. On completion of this demonstration I inverted all of the Youth Crew in their harnesses which is our final safety check prior to commencing our first climbs. With some nerves and a great deal of courage and determination every member of the Youth Crew are currently attempting their first climb to the topgallant yard (highest yard) on top of the foremast. This climb will complete today’s activities and on completion a very weary Youth Crew will turn in for their first night onboard Young Endeavour. Tomorrow we will depart Hobson’s Bay and commence our passage down to the south of Port Phillip Bay. Until tomorrow, take care. Yours Aye Captain Gav
