Voyage Commences

Hi Everyone,                    Happy New Year!! Welcome to Young Endeavours first voyage for 2018. I’m back as the Relief Captain for this voyage so that Captain Mike can take a well deserved break and as always am extremely excited about being back on the ship. This voyage will see us sail from Hobart to Melbourne via the East Coast of Tasmania which is just short of 500nm. Along the way we will get to explore some of the spectacular coastline along Tasmania’s picturesque East Coast before crossing the infamous Bass Strait. We have put together another great Staff Crew for this voyage who I know will take great care of our new Youth Crew ensuring that they all have an amazing experience. The Young Endeavour Staff Crew for this voyage are as follows:Captain –                                           GavSail Master –                                     GuvNavigator –                                        James  BOATSO –                                          JordoRed Watch Leader –                      Megan   White Watch Leader –                  JimmyBlue Watch Leader –                     AdamChef –                                                  KeelyEngineer –                                          BrettAssistant Watch Leader          KarlyThe voyage commenced at 1500 today when the new Youth Crew joined Young Endeavour berthed starboard side to Hobart’s Macquarie No 1 Wharf. Once gear had been stowed and family and friends had been given a tour of the ship I gave my welcome address then on completion said our farewell’s to our guests. At 1545 lines were cast off and we safely departed our berth then commenced the 14nm passage down the Derwent River and into the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. During this passage we completed a safety brief, some ‘ice breaker’ activities and ships tours before coming safely to anchor in the picturesque Snug Bay at 1730. Dinner followed with Chef Keely producing the first of what I am sure will be many great meals throughout this voyage. Once we had cleaned up from dinner we all gathered at midships where we conducted Captains and Sail Master chats. During these chats we discuss our expectations and give the Youth Crew a rundown of what they can expect during the next eleven days of the voyage.  With these chats complete Guv the Sail Master gave his harness and climbing brief and has now handed the Youth Crew back to their Watch Leaders for deck safety and completion of Full Value Contracts. These activities should continue until 2200 when we will have completed all of our scheduled first day activities. It has been a good start to the voyage and I am pleased how well the Youth Crew have already settled into their new environment.Tomorrow will be another busy day with the possibility of an early morning swim before undertaking first climbs of Young Endeavours foremast. Until tomorrow, take care. Yours AyeCaptain Gav

Dear readers,
STS Young Endeavour is, by the definition and origin of her name, about Aussie youths trying hard to achieve something difficult. This voyage certainly provided that... and then some. A challenging experience from all angles and areas. Yet the Youth Crew prevailed and found success. They should therefore be justifiably proud of themselves for persevering, seeing the silver lining and never wavering in their mission to have a great adventure. I am very proud of all of them and I'm sure you are too!
9 Days ago 23 Youth Crew from all over Australia, came together to sail this vessel, have fun and challenge themselves. They have not only done that, but have faced and overcome fears, and learnt a lot about themselves and each other.
They leave with new skills, improved persistence, resilience and adaptability, as well as generally knowing they are more capable than what they probably thought. And of course, having made great new friends - most probably, friends for life. It never gets old for us staff members, as we truly love our work.
Fair winds and following seas.
