Voyage 4/10 Underway

Hi Everyone, Welcome to Voyage 4/10 which is the first of our southern voyages for 2010. This voyage will see us depart Sydney and over the next 11 days sail this magnificent ship 580nm to Melbourne. I would like to introduce the Team of Staff Crew that will facilitate this voyage of adventure: Captain – Gavin Dawe Sail Master – Andrew (Kenny) Callander Navigator – Joel BOATSO – Tug Wilson Red Watch Leader – Mark Horton White Watch Leader – Josh Bignell Blue Watch Leader – Sammi Court Chef – Chad Morgan Engineer – Turbo Pearson Medic – Lauren King The voyage commenced at 1500 today when the new Youth Crew joined Young Endeavour at her regular Sydney berth at Fleet Base East. Once gear was stowed, everyone mustered on deck for my welcome address and Staff Crew introductions. We farewelled loved ones, family and friends and then prepared to set sail. At 1600 we cast-off lines and proceeded across the harbour, working our way through the normal Sydney Harbour traffic to our anchorage in Athol Bay for the night. During this transit and after we had safely anchored the Watch Leaders conducted a number of ‘ice breaker activities’ which was soon followed by ships tours. Dinner followed, with Chef Chad once again demonstrating his excellent culinary skills. Once we had cleaned up from dinner, I had a bit of chat to the Youth Crew about what their voyage would entail and my expectations for the next eleven days. Then Kenny, as Sail Master had a chat about some of the rules, regulations and safety aspects before giving a safety aloft brief and demonstration on how to climb the foremast. On completion of this demonstration I inverted all of the Youth Crew in their harnesses which is our final safety check prior to commencing our first climbs. The time is now 2310 and I am pleased to announce that With some nerves and a great deal of courage and determination every single member of the Youth Crew has now successfully made it all the way to the topgallant yard (highest yard) on top of the foremast. This climb successfully completes todays activities and a very weary Youth Crew will be shortly turning in for their first night onboard Young Endeavour. Tomorrow we will depart Sydney Harbour and commence our passage south along the very picturesque NSW South Coast. Until tomorrow, take care. Yours Aye Captain Gav
