Day 01 – And They’re Off!

Ahoy there! Welcome to the Captain’s Log for Voyage 20!
This isn’t just any voyage. This time we’ve embarked 24 former Youth Crew (now dubbed Returnees!) and 3 Radio Operators, because we’re supporting the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race as a Radio Relay Vessel!

Our newest band of Returnees joined us bright and early alongside HMAS Waterhen in Sydney and were put straight to work straight preparing the ship for the voyage. Once everyone had arrived and stowed their bags below, it was time for us to gather on deck for a quick welcome to the ship and, farewell to family and friends. I also quickly introduced the talented Staffies taking us down to Hobart: Sail Master – Charlotte, Navigator – Seb, Watch Officer – Kyle, White Watch Leader – Sara, Red Watch Leader – Christine, Blue Watch Leader – Matty, Engineers Nobby and Sumo, and Chef – Ash.

We then made our final preparations for departure and headed off into Sydney Harbour, keen to nab a prime viewing position for the start of the race. During our scenic sail out to North Head, Safety Expert Matty gave us a comprehensive safety brief followed by an introduction to our Harnesses. Chef Ash then served up a delicious lunch of steak, creamy tomato pasta and chicken kiev.

After lunch there was just enough time for Ash to give her Health Care Provider brief and Engineer Nobby to give some pointers on using the facilities on board. Suddenly it was just before 1pm and Sail Master Charlotte piped everyone up on deck to witness the start of the 78th Sydney to Hobart. Returnees and Staffies alike were thrilled to watch the frontrunners zoom by before the chaos following the main pack. Afterwards it was time for us to follow them out and begin our official duties.

Once outside the heads we quickly went about setting sails and settling into our watches. All our Returnees easily got back into the swing of things whether it had been 2 years or 20 since their last voyage.

Tune each day as we adventure down to Hobart! Until then, stay safe friends! Captain Libby+
