Day 2 – Sail Away!

Ahoy there landlubbers and armchair sailors, welcome to the Captain’s Log for Day 2!

As the day dawned, Sail Master Tomo woke up the ship and hurried us all onto the uppers for Early Morning Activity with a beautiful sunrise for a backdrop. It would turn out to be an auspicious start to a glorious nautical day!

We headed below for a delicious breakfast by Chef Ash and to get ready for the day. Soon we were back up on deck for an introduction to the “Colours” ceremony and our very first Morning Brief. During the Morning Brief we heard: the plan for the day with Sail Master Tomo, a weather update from Navigator Seb and a salty tale from Watch Officer Charlotte. It was then time for the best hour of the day… Happy Hour! As Tomo says, “A clean ship is a happy ship!”

Once every corner of the ship was spotless, we were back up on deck for a comprehensive Safety Brief with Safety Expert Theresa. To round out the morning, we went through setting and furling the fore and aft sails before heading below to see what Ash and her Master Chefs Lachy, Renee and Tyler had whipped up for us.

Finally, it was time to “cast off the bow lines, sail away from safe harbour, catch the trade winds in our sails” (Mark Twain). Whilst the Staffies piloted us safely out of Gladstone Harbour, Engineer Hutchy tested our safety knowledge with Round 1 of Ropies. We then set about putting theory into practice, setting and furling the fore and aft sails. With the sails set, we were ready for Tacking Stations where we learned to turn the ship across the wind. A skill we may soon need as Tomo informed us the engines were off and we would be sailing overnight to a mystery destination!

As we headed below for dinner, Watch Leader Matty quickly piped us back up on deck for a pod of dolphins. Many then opted to eat their dinner on deck as a spectacular sunset rounded out a great day.

Overnight we’ll be getting an introduction to being the “watch on deck”, learning to keep the ship safe at the helm, as lookouts and conducting rounds.

Tune in tomorrow as we discover our mystery destination! Captain Libby +
