Day 1 – Ahoy New Shipmates!

Ahoy there landlubbers, armchair sailors, and of course, our new ship mates! Welcome to the Captain’s Log for Voyage 16/23!

It was a beautiful and warm spring day for the Youthies of voyage 16/23 (and a few friends and family) to join us alongside in Gladstone, Queensland. Once on board, we gathered midships for some much-needed shade so I could welcome everyone and introduce my talented Staff Crew. For the voyage down to Brisbane I am joined by: Sail Master – Tomo, Navigator – Seb, Watch Officer – Charlotte, Assistant Watch Officer – Nick, White Watch Leader – Matty, Red Watch Leader – Sara, Blue Watch Leader – Theresa, Engineers – Mick and Hutchy, and the most important person on board… Chef – Ash!

Once I was finished the welcomes and introductions, Sail Master Tomo allowed time for final hugs before (politely) shooing family and friends off the boat. The tide may not have been with us to sail straight away but we still had a busy evening ahead!

First up Watch Leaders took charge for ice breakers and ships tours, then it was time to settle on deck for the Captain’s and Sail Master’s Chats before heading to dinner. Chef Ash treated us all to steak, fish and chips, or pasta, before a tough choice between fruit salad or cheesecake for dessert.

After Dinner, Chef Ash put on her Medical Care Provider hat and gave us a brief about staying healthy and well whilst on board. Our resident Safety Expert Matty then gave us a comprehensive brief on our safety harness, giving us a chance to get familiar with all its features. Once we were all comfortable with our safety equipment it was time to break into our watches so we could rotate through setting our goals for the voyage, Deck Safety and First Climbs. One by one our brave Youthies laid aloft for the first time, and I’m pleased to report that all Youthies made it all the way up to the Topgallant and down again!

Once all Youthies were safely back on deck and high fives administered, Tomo informed us it was finally time for bed. Hopefully we’ll all get a good night’s sleep before our adventure continues tomorrow!

Stay safe new friends! Captain Libby+
