Day 6 – Ahoy Orpheus Island!
G’day land dwellers,
After busy night, we arrived at Orpheus Island and anchored with the lovely view of the surrounding environment. Upon anchoring many Youthies were overjoyed at the prospect of touching land for the first time in 5 days. Being on a ship for this long really does make you appreciate land!
A quick salad bar lunch provided by Chef Ash and Master Chefs Sami, Robbie and Clare, helped fuel us for the busy afternoon ahead. The Youthies filed into the boat and were dropped ashore with some assistance from the James Cook University Marine Biology Research Team. Whilst the Youthies were now on land, they were still feeling the effects of the rocking of the boat. We were lucky enough to be taken on an exclusive tour of the research site and lab by Bec, the manager of the site. The Youthies were blown away when shown the amazing coral touch tank that displayed many of the region’s beautiful coral and marine species. A massive thanks to Bec and the team at JCU for providing all of us with this amazing opportunity!
Back on the boat Bec was given an in-depth tour of our amazing tall ship and then was given a proper salty sea dog farewell by Dion and the Youthies.
It was time to say a salty goodbye to Orpheus Island, so we weighed anchor, setting off on the next leg of our journey. Heading North with the wind at our backs, it was time for the moment we’ve all been waiting for, to get our square sails up and begin sailing. Woohoo!!!
Saturday night onboard saw all enjoying a delicious Mexican night provided by the amazing Chef Ash and her Master Chefs. With a beautiful sunset overlooking the Palm Isles, White watch braved it on the bow sprit rocking and riding with every passing wave. Blue watch later climbed to the Course to watch the rich orange sun set into the horizon and shift into night where they then stargazed sitting above the deck.

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
