Day 9– Ahoy Tangalooma! (Command Day Part 2)

Ahoy there land lubbers!

Our previous log left you just prior to our overnight watches. We didn’t get many z’s as we had to reach certain waypoints to complete our Command day navigation task which required late night Tacking Stations. ‘Bird Watch’ finished off the morning watch with a beautiful sunrise and a couple of pods of dolphins.

We headed to a scrumptious, hot breakfast made by our Youthie Chefs before heading to our Morning Brief. Today, Youthie SM Hamish took us through the plan for the day, we had an informative demonstration on how to call birds from the Naviguru himself, Xavier, then the lovely Annabelle added a Youthie flare to our sailmates greeting. Finishing off, our Captain Jono gave us some fine words of wisdom from T-Swift.

Only having control of the ship for one more hour, we completed more tasks including a Staffies round of Ropies to see who knew the Youthies best (Christine won). Finally, some of our wonderful Youthies gave some educational talks: tips for fishing in Darwin from Steven, how to perform the perfect breastroke kick by Kate, and how to perform a delicate veterinary procedure from Jo and Maggie.

We reluctantly handed the ship back over to Captain Libby and her wonderful crew before anchoring at the gorgeous Moreton Island, where Papa Matty took us ashore and Staffies kept us safe while we went for a snorkel. We saw an array of brightly coloured sea creatures and the dark, mysterious Tangalooma wrecks.

After a nice walk and an ice-cream break, Papa Matty ferried us back to the ship where water restrictions were in place and none of us could shower. Shaun was a bit salty that we had used more than our fair share of water, and we were a bit salty from the ocean.

A nice, relaxing afternoon and a delicious dinner by Haydo and his incredible MasterChef’s Dani, Finn and Ally, was followed by a Command Day debrief. The Youthies discussed key takeaways from the Command Day experience leaving us feeling refreshed and excited about the team connections we have created.

We are currently safely anchored off Mud Island and excited for our overnight anchor watches.

See ya tomorrow! From Jo and Thea xx

Jo – Mum, Dad and Chris, missing you lots! Say hi to the fur-children for me <3

Thea – I’m still alive just a bit bruised! Miss you and ready for my second holiday! <3
