Day 9 – Command Day Part 2

Once upon a time on a tall ship I didn’t spew,

Day 2 of command day started off approximately 0300 with jarring tacking stations run by our; diligent, amazing, wonderful, gorgeous, superb (DAWGS) youthie command team, whilst the lack of sleep was getting to some, spirits were kept high with singing, dancing and clapping circles. Then our bluey watch group replaced the reddies for the morning watch while everyone else woke up at 0630 with a striking rendition of “Stitches” by our sailmaster Jenna at 0630. Sails were furled first thing following breakfast (served by our DAWGS youthie chefs), leading us into our final checkpoint spear headed by our Youthie Navigator Ari AKA Shawn Mendes.

Then control of the vessel was passed back to the staff and it was time for our youthie run morning brief, where our command team let us all know the plan for the day and give us a boost of motivation. Tommy led us in singing the Australian anthem set to the tune of “country roads”. Then the happiest hour of the day ensued with Disney tunes and grooves. The grooves continued when the line dance committee gathered on midships to teach the youthies the DAWGS line dance, which began as nothing more than a dress rehearsal and ended with a full dance party. Energy was high and tummies were rumbling just in time for Haydos return for lunch.

Lunch was enjoyed at midships while we listened to life skill briefs that included Hunter the cow and Mack the cowboy, an informative chat about windsurfing by Ethen and an Inspirational speech by future actor of the year, our favourite, Josh. Then Erik’s engineering skills came into good use when all the youthies grouped together to complete another task, Using nothing but ropes and knots we made a hammock to hold all the youthies that we estimated weigh around 1600kgs.

Then the ship was officially returned to its rightful owners and the youthies finally had the chance to get the rope swing out and go for a swim in the ocean. After seeing some cool moves off the rope swing by Josh, Ollie, Ben and Hunter, we all settled into groups for command day debrief, we discussed highs and lows of the past 27 hours and then discussed what our takeaways and lessons were. We then had our first taste of free time since the start of command day before a delicious and filling dinner from Haydo. To finish off the night we settled down on midships with some popcorn to watch “Around Cape Horn” and “True Spirit” on the projector.

We Youthies are ready for a good night’s sleep to prepare for community day tomorrow and anchor watches commencing during the night.
