Day 4 – Patonga to sea

Arrrrrrrrrrrr, Ahoy there! I like the cut of your jib.

This daily update is brought to you by none other than Melanie and Jack.

Started up the day anchored, after a restful night’s sleep. Sea sickness mostly abated, delightful full english breakfast filling our stomachs, we looked with optimism for the new day. Starting strong, the youth crew utterly decimated the staffies at a “Spot It” like game called Ubuntu (there was never any doubt really!).

Then, the moment we had all been waiting for… HAPPY HOUR, where we happily cleaned the very happy boat (and no happy hour is complete without a beautiful rendition of the “Happy Hour” (TM) song).

Following, we learnt how to, non-electronically, navigate the waves (we’re real sailors now) and about the sea rules of the ocean (also known as ROTR).

Scrumptious toasties and pasta bake was served for lunch, after which we caught up on some lost sleep. Then it was time to Anchor Aweigh and begin sailing North on very peaceful conditions. Gone were the violent winds of Tuesday, which was much appreciated. Now at sea, watches started, with the youth crew learning how to manage the helm, look out for dangers and run hourly rounds.

Excitement reigned as cries of “Man Overboard!” were heard. Alas, it appeared our poor dummy, Oscar, had tripped on a banana peel and consequently hurled overboard. A daring rescue mission began, however was quickly thwarted by the presence of sharks in the nearby waters! Don’t fear, Oscar was still rescued, though through safer means. (Man overboard training drill – Ed)

Night approached, and with a delicious steak dinner on board, we continued watches throughout the night.

Keep an eye on this space, more to come!
