Day 7 – Kangaroo Island

Ahoy dear readers, day 7 found the ship sailing east through Investigator Strait under fore and aft sails, whilst youth crew conducted challenging teamwork exercises throughout the night. At 0700 myself and Hoppy the Engineer took each watch through a sail handling validation evolution to ensure their seamanship skills were at the required level for Command Day. Happily they were, with all watches proving safe and competent, gaining our stamp of approval.

Captain’s Challenge was next, where I set a whole-ship mission to set all fore and aft sails (which involved climbing the main mast to cast loose the mainsail) and brace the yards. An activity designed to get everyone’s involvement, to challenge, and also to allow individuals to demonstrate their skills to the collective, which would prove beneficial at the Command Day Elections later today! Anyhow, they got it done in good time and then handed-in sail as we proceeded to anchor in the vicinity of American River in Eastern Cove, Kangaroo Island.

Lunch was next on the agenda, then a wee siesta. Rope races got the blood pumping again at 1300, then staff presented an introduction to meteorology. Your humble narrator was up next, for a Command Day brief on what to expect and how to best prepare. Intention will be to hand over the keys to the ship, navigation instructions and a task list to the youth crew at 1000, and then staff will recede into the shadows for the following 24 hours. I could sense the excitement, as I handed over to them, for their Command Day elections.

Ladies and gents allow me to introduce the youth crew elected Captain and her crew… Captain – Inara, Sailmaster – Tilly, Navigator – Garry, Watch Officer – Lewis, Watch Leaders – Poppy, Frosty and Phoebe and most importantly, the chefs: Jorjah, Jackson and Georgie. Congratulations team, I know you will serve your crew well.

Meanwhile, Hoppy and Emma were assisting Ash in the galley, producing an amazing asian style buffet with: Mongolian beef, honey chicken, char sui port, dim sum, fried rice, asian greens and chicken and corn soup. I can say for a fact that all of the above was sensational (I need to quality control all the food of course!). Well done team and thank you 🙂

To round out the night we screened our favourite film on our topside, teak deck cinema. What an action-packed day. Youth crew have now hit their racks and will keep us safe, maintaining anchor watches overnight. Join us tomorrow to read all about Command Day. Until then, stay safe.
