Day 2 – Seamanship Training
Ahoy dear readers, day two of our voyage found the ship alongside McLaren wharf, Port Adelaide about to get underway. At 0530 staff crew conducted an unberthing and pilotage brief, before casting off lines and slipping through the Tom “Diver” Derrick bridge at 0600.
Under the cover of darkness we made our Port Adelaide departure and as the sun rose over the Adelaide Hills, we entered the Gulf St Vincent. Youth Crew were roused at 0630 for a light morning activity on deck, then it was off for breakfast and showers before morning brief at 0800.
On completing the morning brief, YC were again regaled by Theresa our survival equipment specialist, with a briefing on all things safety and survival related.
After YC had become safety boffins, it was off to clean the ship or as we call it, “happy hour”. There was much singing and dancing and sweeping and polishing.
On completion, we threw a life-ring over the side to exercise man overboard reactions and recovery. Everyone did what they needed to do, so it was deemed a successful evolution. Good driving Tomo and Trev.
Next was lunch before Watch Leaders continued seamanship training and sail handling drills, culminating in setting the jib and mainsail and then conducting several tacks. Everyone’s training seems to be coming along nicely, so Matty gave them some down time before dinner.
Youth Crew will now take turns at 4 hour watches overnight, conducting watch-on-deck duties such as helming, lookout and rounds, to ensure everything is ship shape, allowing the remainder to get some rest.
With a lovely southerly breeze on our port beam, we will sail overnight, aiming to drop anchor tomorrow forenoon.
Until then, stay safe.

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
