Day 4 – Anchor in Athol Bay

Welcome to the Captain’s Log for Day 4 of Voyage 05/24.

Ahoy dear readers, the ship remained at anchor overnight in Athol Bay, with Youth Crew keeping us safe in anchor watches.

Wakey wakey was piped at 0630 and an energising morning activity was conducted, under the most gorgeous sunrise. Morning brief was next at 0800, then we cleaned below decks. Preparations were then made to move the ship to Sub Base Platypus. “Anchor aweigh!” they cried, and we commenced our transit into Neutral Bay, coming alongside and all fast at 1030, and just in time for lunch.

A little leg stretch was then in order, so explorations around the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust (Harbour Trust) managed, Sub Base Platypus site, and beyond, was conducted. Sub Base Platypus is a former torpedo factory, submarine base and gas works in North Sydney, Cammeraygal Country. Pretty impressive place, to be fair. Some of the crew also found a lovely coffee shop nearby (chef’s kiss).

All hands then turned-to upper deck cleaning and gave the ship an amazing scrub and polish. I can now see my reflection in the bollards! Matty and Bec spent the afternoon aloft, making the rigging tiddly. The engineers were below decks doing engineering things. The ship was a hive of activity, making her ship-shape. Young Endeavour is going to look sparkling for the open day tomorrow (from 1300-1600 on Sunday) and in better shape generally, for the youth development voyages to come. Great job everyone and thank you very much for your efforts.

To round out the day, Chef Steve and friends had knocked up some bellisimo pizzas which were enjoyed on deck. The night was then capped off by a film on the topside projector screen. If you haven’t seen ‘Around Cape Horn’ folks… do yourself a favour 😉

Tomorrow morning, Youth Crew for our shake-down voyage will depart and then ship’s staff will prepare for our next voyage on Monday. It’s been another fantastic voyage with some great young Australian shipmates. Another crew of YE voyage alumni being released back into the world, to do good things. We hope they learnt a thing or two, and had an amazing adventure.
