Day 3 – PASSAGE NEWCASTLE TO SEAL ROCKS

Ahoy there friends and family,

Us Youthies are far off to a rocky start, filled with a severe lack of sleep and an intense seasickness epidemic. However, that isn’t dampening our spirits.

The wake up alarm sounded at 0700, followed by a delish brekky from our magician of a chef, Ash. The waffles were especially good at boosting the morale on deck. We received our morning brief, filled with an unmatched enthusiasm from the Staffies, and then were introduced to a little thing called ‘Happy Hour’. This is not as fun as it sounds. It’s an hour long cleaning spree, followed by a close inspection from our harsh Sailmaster, Sara (jokes, you’re a legend)

In attempt to lift the spirits of the Youth Crew, Engineer Simon challenged our watches to a battle of mind, spirit, and song, in the form of a love song singoff (in keeping with the Valentines Day vibes). Of course, the best crew won (Red Watch ‘Oohaha’)

Things really started to kick off when we were given the opportunity to climb aloft the 30 metre foremast, and untie the gaskets holding the square sails in place. This was met with enthusiasm from some, and even more seasickness from others. It was a great experience, which was heightened by some interesting visitors…a pod of pilot whales.

We are super excited for what is thrown our way next.

Until next time,

Stay Groovy

Erin and Lily (Red Watch ‘Oohaha’)
