Day 2 – Newcastle to Sea
Good evening Shipmates,
After a big first day onboard, including the climb to the top of the foremast, the Youth Crew (YC) slept very soundly on their first night onboard. Sail Mistress Sara woke everyone at 0630 and we all mustered on the upper deck for a few laps to get the blood flowing followed by another ‘Ice Breaker’ activity, this time with the whole crew. That was followed by a delicious breakfast from Chef Ash.
At 0800 everyone was back on deck for their first ‘Colours’ ceremony, and then Morning Brief hosted by Sara. The Youth Crew met ‘Salty the Seadog’, whose job it is to explain some nautical expressions, their origins and their contemporary meanings. Sara briefed on the plan for the day, Navigator Seb explained where we were going today and gave us a weather forecast. Finally I gave my quote for the day.
The YC then received a medical brief from Ash, Sara spoke about respect for shipmates, the Ship and ourselves; and finally I gave my speech covering the plan for the voyage and encouraged the YC to take all opportunities to make the best of their time onboard.
The Ship departed Newcastle Harbour at 1000 and the YC spent the rest of the forenoon practising deck safety. At 1115 the crew cycled through the Cafe to enjoy Ash’s amazing lunch. Choices included a Beef Vindaloo curry and Baked Salmon and salads. After lunch the crew enjoyed a bit of down time, during which many of the crew took the opportunity for a nap.
The afternoon consisted of practical setting and furling of the Stay sails. Then the YC commenced Watch on Deck duties, which include being helmsman, lookout and conducting hourly safety rounds of the Ship, which continued through the night.
The plan for tomorrow is to continue sailing north towards our planned anchorage at Seal Rocks.
Until tomorrow, when I will hand over Captain’s Log writing duties to the YC.
Yours aye, Captain Mike

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
