Day 1 – Alongside Newcastle Harbour
Ahoy there Shipmates,
Welcome to the Captain’s Log for Day 1 of Voyage 04/24, Newcastle to Sydney.
The Youth Crew joined the Ship berthed at the Tug Wharf in Newcastle Harbour, NSW. It was a beautiful sunny summer’s day with a breeze which freshened as the day progressed. The Youth Crew embarked the ship at 1500 and were welcomed by myself and the Staff Crew for the voyage, who included: Sail Mistress Sara, assisted by Thomo, Navigator Seb, Watch Officer Matty, Engineers Mick and Simon, Chef Ash, White Watch Leader TJ, Red Watch Leader Phil and Blue Watch Leader Dion.
The intention was to remain alongside for the first night due to the lack of nearby suitable anchorages. After the welcome aboard ceremony the watches launched into ‘Ice Breakers’ and Ship Tours. On completion we had dinner and then Matty gave the Harness Brief followed by the Young Endeavour Climbing Brief . At 2000 the Youth Crew began laying aloft to conduct First Climbs to the Top Gallant Yard..
Climbs were conducted efficiently, and although not everyone successfully climbed to the Top Gallant Yard on their first attempt, everyone had a go and tried hard. This was completed by 2330 and the crew were sent to bed for a well-deserved rest.
The intention is to remain alongside in Newcastle Harbour overnight and weigh anchor in the morning at 1000 and proceed out of the harbour to commence the sailing component of the voyage.
Good night and stay safe. Until tomorrow.
Yours Aye, Captain Mike Gough

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
