Day 7 – Ahoy Nelson Bay!
Ahoy there landlubbers and armchair sailors! Welcome to the Captain’s Log for Day 7. Where has the time gone?!
The day kicked off early for our Youthies with Captain’s Setting and Furling commencing on the Morning Watch. Captain’s Setting and Furling is the last checkpoint prior to Command Day where Engineer Sumo and I put each watch through their paces setting and furling sails to make sure they can do it safely. I’m delighted to report that after a couple of hours on deck, every watch passed with flying colours!
Once the hard part of the day was done, it was time to commence the pilotage into Port Stephens and head to anchor in beautiful Nelson Bay. As the heat started to build, we quickly put up the sunshades before an abbreviated Morning Brief. By the time we were done, Steve and his Master Chefs had a lunch of burgers, pies and delicious fresh salads prepared.
After lunch the sea boats were launched, and preparations were made to head ashore. Once ashore the Youthies enjoyed swimming, beach games and a cheeky ice cream to cool off.
Everyone was back on board and cleaned up in time for my brief about Command Day, going over the rules and guidelines for the big day. I then left our Youthies to mull over the upcoming Command Day Elections while they enjoyed yet another delightful dinner. Once the meal was cleaned up it was time to get down to business.
Command Day Elections are where the Youthies devise their own system to elect their own Command Team to lead them through the 24 hours they’re in charge of the ship. I’m pleased to announce they made the following selections: Captain – Ben, Sail Master – Maia, Navigator – Dom, Watch Officer – Archer, Watch Leaders – Max, Bella and Tara, and Chefs – George, Oliver and Matt. Congratulations all! I’m sure you’ll lead your fellow Youthies well and work successfully together to achieve great things on Command Day!
With the Elections over the Youthies were rewarded with a movie night with “Around Cape Horn” on the big screen under the stars. Afterwards they’ll settle into anchor watches overnight before their big day!
Tune in tomorrow to see how they go! Captain Libby+

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
