Day 3 – Hands to Tacking Stations!
Ahoy there landlubbers and armchairs sailors, I hope you’re enjoying the tales of V03/24. Welcome to Day 3!
Our Youthies did well overnight keeping the ship safe during their watches. Trev woke the ship up at 0700 allowing an extra bit of rest for our Youthies after their watches overnight. After breakfast and showers, it was time for Morning Brief at 0900. At Morning Brief each day we’ll hear the “Plan for the Day” with Trev, a navigation and weather update with Nav Seb, and “Chewing the Fat with Matt” where we’ll learn some nautical knowledge. After Morning Brief, it was time for Happy Hour! A clean ship is a happy ship and each day we’ll make sure our new home is sparkling before we get stuck into the day’s program.
Once the cleaning was done Trev gathered us all at midships for the Main Brief. He then put us to work to set the Main Sail. In no time at all it was time to eat, and Chef Steve served up another delicious lunch with the help of Marco, Maia and Matt.
At 1300 Engineer Sumo took charge for Round 1 of Rope Races! With Rope Races done it was time to set more sails and head to Tacking Stations! Young Endeavour made for a beautiful sight in the glorious afternoon sunshine with a full press of sails and all hands on deck ready to get some practice in. Under the guidance of the Watch Leaders and Sail Master Trev, we tacked the ship back and forth, learning how to turn through the wind under sail.
At the end of Tacking Stations, a lifebuoy was thrown into the water so the Staffies could practice their “Man Overboard” drills, with Youthies on deck ready to help. It was such a glorious afternoon there were plenty of offers jump in and swim out to recover the buoy instead!
After all the excitement of the afternoon there was still time to squeeze in one more brief. Nav Seb taught us all about fixing the ship to know where we are and navigating safely around dangers to get to our destination. We’ll be putting everything we learnt into practice tonight as we settle back into our watches.

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
