Day 2 – A View From The Top(gallant)!

Ahoy there landlubbers and armchair sailors! Welcome to the Captain’s Log for Day 2!

It was a beautiful morning in Sydney Harbour as Sail Master Trev woke everyone up at 0630, with the sunrise to the east and views of the iconic Opera House and Bridge. Our Youthies emerged on deck for their first experience of Early Morning Activity to kickstart the day before Trev sent us below again to have breakfast and get ready for the day.

At 0800 the “Colours” ceremony was performed (raising the Australian Flag and White Ensign) before a snappy Morning Brief to cover the plan for the day. From there we cracked straight into the Harness Brief with Safety Expert Matty. Covering all the features of our harnesses and the safety system in the rigging that will keep us safe whilst we lay aloft. With the briefs done it was the time we were all waiting for… First Climbs! With confidence levels ranging from “heck no” to “let me at it!” I’m proud to report that all our brave Youthies made it off the deck!

In no time at all it was time for Lunch thanks to Chef Steve and his Master Chefs for the day Hayden, Archer, and Luca. Then it was back up on deck to finish off some climbing and deck safety in preparation for setting and furling sails later in the day.

By 1330 Navigator Seb was getting keen to get moving. “It’s a sailing ship not an anchoring ship!” he said. So, we weighed anchor and waved goodbye to Sydney Harbour, dodging racing sailing vessels as we headed out to sea.

With plenty of time left in the afternoon Trev put the watches to work setting and furling sails to make sure they have their drills down pat. Then, with his keen Sail Master’s eye, Trev noted the strong southerly winds and Seb’s planned navigation track to the north… perfect for square sails! So, after laying aloft to cast loose gaskets, our Youthies set the Topsail and Topgallant!

It’s been a busy day but it’s not over just yet! Tonight, our Youthies will get an introduction to keeping watches by steering the ship at the helm, keeping a lookout, and completing rounds to keep the ship safe. Captain Libby +
