Day 1 – Ahoy new shipmates

Ahoy there shipmates, landlubbers and armchair sailors, it was fantastic to meet the lovely youth crew of Voyage 02/23 today at Geelong’s Wangim Walk, comprising 23 Aussie youth, from all over the country. They embarked at 1500 and after our welcome and crew introductions we slipped and proceeded out into Port Phillip Bay and over to Portarlington, where the ship came to anchor.

During the transit Youth Crew members were split into red, white and blue watches and their Watch Leaders took the opportunity to conduct some ice breaker activities and ships tours. By the way, let me introduce our skilled and experienced staff crew for this voyage: Sailmaster – Tori. Navigator – Seb. Watch Officer – Kyle. Assistant Watch Officer – Libby. Red Watch Leader – Tomo. White Watch Leader – Theresa. Blue Watch Leader – Christine. Chef – Ash. Engineer – Hoppy. Second Engineer – Sumo.

Once at anchor a lovely dinner was served, then we had a chat about voyage principles and what to expect… Tori aka the Sail Empress, spoke to them about youth crew responsibilities and a few ‘guidelines’ to ensure communal harmony and unconditional positive regard for all.

I spoke to them about what to expect over the next 10.5 days (time’s already ticking!) and ways to ensure maximum involvement in the program: Challenge yourself, give everything a go and leave with no regrets, was the message. Theresa, our ships safety and survival equipment specialist, conducted the harness briefing and everyone then laid aloft the foremast, climbing as high as they could go. I was super proud of everyone tonight as it wasn’t easy for most, but they pushed themselves and had a red hot crack.

Of course there will be more challenges to come, but our sea puppies are quickly finding their sea legs and have now turned in for a good night sleep. Intend remaining at anchor overnight and making a Rip departure after lunch tomorrow.

Keep safe.

Yours Aye, Captain Adam Charlie Farley+
