Day 5 – Life on a 45 degree angle

Ahoy there, this is Red Watch bringing you tonight’s Captain’s Log.

We started off today with the 0800-1200 watch – taking over from the Blueys who had just done the 0400-0800 and were ready for a big nap. We were treated to sights of Eden and Green Cape Lighthouse, having not seen much of the coast for the past two days.

Much to the excitement of the crew, the sea had calmed down a lot and breakfast stayed down better (for most). After a morning brief (which included some interesting information about whales and cetaceans from Tori), we moved onto the happiest hour of the day, and soon enough, the ship was looking spotless. Back up on deck, Seb taught us about latitude, longitude and fixing the ship’s position using the paper charts and the gps systems.

As always, ash cooked up a storm for lunch, treating us to fresh bread rolls (with roast lamb and gravy), and lots of sides to choose from. That too, stayed down better than previous days (again, for most…). After lunch, and using an odd collection of fruits and vegetables, Evan taught us the ‘rules of the road’, including what different markers and lights mean, and the hierarchy of different boats.

We then got ready to set up the square sails, which required a climb to the top of the foremast. Sights of dolphins, seals and albatross kept us all entertained while we got ready to set the sails. Back down on deck we then set the squares and our pace instantly quickened.

We’ve just enjoyed a delicious dinner of nachos, quiches, pavlovas and sticky date pudding, and are looking forward to a hopefully calmer sleep now that the swell has lowered and more of us have our sea legs. We are all looking forward to anchoring again soon, and hopefully having a chance to swim and go ashore for an explore.

Lots of love to everyone back home, we are looking forward too seeing you all again soon, but of course are enjoying all the challenges this voyage is bringing us – we will never take living on a 0 degree angle for granted again (multiple days of living on a 45 degree angle is starting to take its toll…).

Signing off, Lily, Ben and Moses (and the rest of red watch and the crew).
