Up and Over

Situation at 21:00-The voyage started today at 16:00 when, with a full Youth Crew embarked, YOUNG ENDEAVOUR sailed fronm Garden Island. Before long we had anchored in Rose Bay where the day one activities started. After meeting their Watch Leaders and touring the Ship, theYouth Crew were able to enjoy a quick supper before receiving the welcome aboard brief from Captain John. Before long, XO Chooka was explaining how to properly wear the climbing harness and the correct method to safely climb aloft. The Youth Crew then took turns to climb the Ratlines up to and over the Lower Top. This represents the first of many challenges they will be faced with onboard, and hopefully they will all be successful.Overnight the Youth Crew will stand their first watch. They will practise several important knots, bends and hitches, set theirpersonal goals and climb aloft again, this time to the T’Gallant yard. The Staff Crew for the voyage consists of Captain John, Executive Officer Paul(Chooka), Navigator Phil (Spanky), WhiteWatch Leader Michael (Dutchy), Blue Watch Leader Chris (Polly), Red Watch Leader Sherri-Lee (Shez), Engineer Simon (Stewy) and Chef Ben (Stony).YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Fact File: The Ship is a 44 metre Brigantine purpose built for youth development training. She was built inEngland and presented to the people of Australia by the people of the United Kingdom in 1988. Since that time, over 6,000 young Australians have taken part in the YOUNG ENDEAVOUR experience, in all the oceansof the world.YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Glossary: Brigantine- A sailing vessel with two masts, of which only the foremast is square-rigged, or crossedwith yards. The mainmast is fore-and-aft rigged. Course- The largest and lowest square sail and yard on any mast of a sailing Ship.Thought of the Day: The pursuit of excellence is gratifying and healthy. The pursuit of perfection is frustrating andneurotic. It’s also a terrible waste of time. Author unknown.Yours, AyeJohn Cowan
