TO DARE MIGHTY THINGS

Situation at 21:00Today has been an incredibly busy time. Overnight the watches were busy climbing and learning about the Ship as well as each other.Already some firm friendships look to be establishing themselves. A 06:30 “Wakey Wakey” was followed by early morning activity which started off with an easy jog around the upper deck. After breakfast the first morning brief of the voyage saw Engineer Rags describing the intricacies of a 90 second shower and extolling the wonders of modern sea-going plumbing. Watch Officer Lolly was able to explain the nautical origins of the phrases ” To let the Cat out of the bag” and “Not enough room to swing a Cat”.Morning brief was closely followed by happy hour then morning tea. Chef Polly once again produced an amazing display of what can beachieved in a very small Galley. The hard work of the day started off with Captain Safety and Miss EPIRB going through in considerable detail the operation and procedures for use of all of the safetyequipment onboard. Next on the agenda was linehandling and deck safety as well as setting and furling drills. Once these important classes were completed we were ready to get underway. We sailed at 14:30 and once clear of Newcastle Harbour commenced more setting and furling drills followed by tacking drills. In a short space of time we were visited by an RAAF F-18 Fighter and an RAN Mine Hunter.Because of the Nor’East wind, we have shaped a course South towards Jervis Bay. We are making good time with the square sailsdrawing well in the moderate breeze. There have only been a few green faces so far and Chef Polly has had a full house.YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Fact File: During 2002, the Ship has visited South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland. So far this year 440 young Australians from every State and Territority have experienced 5, 9 or 10 day voyages.YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Glossary: Dolphin Striker-A vertical bar below the Bowsprit used to tension the head rigging.Dog Watches-Thefirst Dog (16:00-18:00) and the last Dog (18:00-20:00). They are used to provide an odd number of watches so that a 1 in 2, 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 watch rotation will alternate through all seven watches.Thought of the Day: Far better it is to dare mighty things,to win glorious trimumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rankwith those poor spirits who neither enjoy much or suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows neither victory or defeat.
