The Circumnavigation Begins

At 1600, our Youth Crew all aboard, we cast off lines and departed Elizabeth Street Pier, Hobart for Voyage 1 of 2001, marking the start of Young Endeavour’s Centenary Circumnavigation of Australia. Prior to departure the ship had been presented with a beautiful Waterford crystal ‘boat bowl’. The bowl, donated by the National Council for the Centenary of Federation and Waterford Wedgwood Australia, was crafted at the renowned glassworks in Ireland out of sand gathered from all states and territories of Australia. The symbolic bowl is decorated with the floral emblems of the states and territories of Australia, matching the design of the ship’s stern nameboard. It will join us in our voyage as we visit the diverse communities that make up our island nation to become a part of the heritage that is the adventure of Young Endeavour. There was a great deal of media interest in our departure with TV stations and newspapers keen to capture our departure on this exciting voyage program. A perfect end to a great couple of days in Hobart. Now we are at anchor away from shoreside distractions and have started to familiarise the Youth Crew with their strange new home and have commenced the intense training required to have them performing as a competent tall ship crew within the next few days.It is a privilege for me to be acting as relief Captain for the full time CO, LCDR Andrew Davis, particularly for this auspicious voyage and, along with all the crew, I am looking forward to a challenging adventure over the next ten days, which these magnificent southern waters can truly provide.Welcome back to LEUT Deb Harris who served on Young Endeavour in 1996 and newly promoted LCDR Chris Galloway who are both relieving some of the regular crew after the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.Cap’n Bob Williams
