SYDNEY TO HOBART YACHT RACE 2017 RETURNEE VOYAGE

Hello Shipmates,Welcome to Day 4 of the voyage. We had a relatively quiet night from a weather perspective. The winds abated and veered more from the SE overnight and accordingly we clewed-up the square sails, set the fore-and-aft sails and started the second engine. Also during the night we became aware of very strong SW winds expected at the entrance to the Derwent River in the early hours of tomorrow, Sat 30 Dec.For this reason it was decided to abandon the plan for an extended stay at anchor in Coles Bay. Instead, once we had completed our early morning race sched, we anchored in the sheltered NW corner of Wineglass Bay and had a quick swim, before weighing anchor and proceeding southwards towards Hobart, motor sailing at best speed.Once we were at sea again it was time for the Morning Brief. Sail master Adam spoke on his plan for the day, followed by Navigator Kyle, who explained why we had to restrict ourselves to a short time at Wineglass Bay and where we were going from here. Salty the Seadog’s story for today was the origin of the legend of Mermaids and the expression ‘Sea Goggles’. Then I gave my quote of the day from William Arthur Ward and the crew then launched into ‘Happy Hour’.After lunch Brett held episode 3 of ‘Rope Races’ entailed the watches making a kite from materials supplied by the Sail Master, within a 20 minute time limit. One kite from the three was moderately successful. At 1700 we weared-ship and altered course to the west and motor sailed through Tasman Island Passage. Once on the western side the winds were quite unpredictable, gusty and very changeable in direction. On completion of another of Chef Keely’s delicious dinners we held the Returnee version of 3-Way chats. This was a real success and gave us a real insight into what our youth crew had got out of their earlier voyage experiences. We also sang Happy Birthday and had a birthday cake for Cassidy’s birthday today and Andreas, whose birthday we missed on Wed 27.We entered the mouth of the Derwent River at 2000 and anchored in Sandy Bay near the Wrest Point Casino at 2200.Until tomorrow,Yours AyeCaptain Mike
