Sydney Harbour

G’day shipmates,Welcome to Young Endeavour’s Voyage 06 for 2017. Our journey starts in the beautiful harbour city of Sydney and ends in the southern NSW port of Eden. We have a magnificent tall ship, wind for our sails and the NSW south coast to explore. The potential is limitless and the sense of adventure is infectious. I would like to introduce the team of Staff Crew who will facilitate this voyage of adventure:Captain – MikeSail Master – EvanNavigator – James BWatch Officer – GuvRed Watch Leader – SumoWhite Watch Leader – James PBlue Watch Leader – MeganChef – MarcosEngineers – Brett and HortoSuper – NeilVoyage 06 officially commenced at 1500 today when the Youth Crew and their families and friends were welcomed onboard to have a quick look around the Ship and meet the Staff Crew before we sailed from Fleet Base East and anchored in Athol Bay, Sydney harbour to commence the afternoon’s activities. The Youth Crew divided into their watches and undertook a few “ice breaker” activities to get to know one another. That was followed by a detailed tour of the Ship conducted by their Watch Leaders.Dinner followed, with Marcos the Chef amazing us with his culinary skills. Once we had cleaned up from dinner James P gave the detailed Safety Equipment brief which covered all of the life saving features of the Ship. The Engineers then spoke on the need to conserve water, especially when showering.I then had a hat to the Youth Crew about what their voyage would entail over the next 11 days. On completion, Evan, as Sail Master spoke on the code of conduct, some general points on safety and living in close quarters with other people. At the end of the briefings the Youthies split into their watches and had their first practical session in deck safety, learning how to safely work the lines to set and furl the sails, including how to put turns on a belaying pin and how to tie a stopper knot. The watches also sat down to write their Full Value Contracts with their Watch Leaders documenting the watches’ desired goals during the voyage.I am very pleased to report that all of the Youth Crew has done extremely well on their first day and from the outset I am impressed with their individual efforts and their team attitude.
