Scawfell Island

Ahoy shipmates and welcome to day 8.It’s Dion here again to fill you in on the day’s activities. Overnight we did some great sailing with all of our fore and aft sail sets. The watches consolidated all of their sail handling knowledge, navigation and also conducted a self reflection activity which asks people to go pretty deep and reflect on some of the behaviours and consider what is working well and what they might like to change. It’s a challenging and at times confronting activity and each of our teams really put an amazing effort in. The Red watch experienced yet another beautiful sunrise to go for a climb and enjoy the morning colours and delights from aloft. In the morning we conducted Captain’s setting and furling and all of the watches achieved setting and furling sails safely without the guidance of staff members. Then it was time to hand in all sail and proceed to anchor at Scawfell Island. The afternoon was spent ashore exploring, swimming and snorkelling. A short little bush walk gave everyone some pretty amazing views of the islands significant butterfly population. We returned back on board for yet another fantastic BBQ and then Command Day elections where the Youth Crew elected the following: Captain: StephSail Master: JonahNav: ZacWatch Officer: FillyWatch Leaders:  Isla, Wen and JesseChefs: Mitch, Jess and Luck  Congratulations to all of our Youth Crew, we are well poised to embark on the next adventure. But first, I’ll now hand over to Ellie and Anna to fill you in on the activities from their perspective. Until tomorrow, fair winds, Dion       Ahoy there maties Anna and Ellie from star and cloud watch are here to enlighten you on our adventurous journey today. Started off with conducting a tack just before we came off watch at 1030pm and this was all too soon followed by a dark and far too early awakening for a 0200 tack as we were heading towards an island . . .  successfully accomplished tack two by all youthies, Thrilled go back to sleep. Then shortly after we were given yet another shake to do a 0430 tack as we were heading back to the Australian shores sooner than we thought. Each watch completed an activity called stop start continue which involved us to dig deep and confront habit that we want to start, stop or continue. Safe to assume that it was a heartfelt and meaningful discussion throughout the watches which ultimately brought watches closer together. Suns out ropes out! We dropped anchor at Scawfell Island and officially re-opened the young endeavour pool but the time with the rope swing! Between flips and bellyflops we had a good laugh and enjoyed the amazing feed shortly after the swing. Watches went to shore one by one then went for a quick bush walk to witness a breathtaking site of butterflies surrounding us and the beauties of Mother Nature. Due to the stunning beaches some of the youthies went snorkelling to see if they could spot anything exciting and take in the beautiful coral but had to head back to the mother ship. As they sun sets on the horizon we had a Barbie on the deck, eating exotic meats like kangaroo and crocodile and filling up on the cheese platters prior to dinner. Youthies discussed how we were going to conduct our poll on who gets what positions on command day. Big shout out to Steph the new Captain of the ship, sail Master Jonah, navigator Zach, watch officer Filly and our three chefs are Luke, Mitch and Jess. Congrats to you guys and good luck for tomorrow!! Finished the night by watching Around Cape Horn under the stars on the deck.
