OFF THE SOUTHERN END OF FRASER ISLAND
EVENING POSITIONWHAT A GREAT DAY FOR WEATHER, PERFECT FOR EVERYTHING EXCEPTSAILING. TODAY HAS BEEN MARKED BY CALM SEAS AND SUNSHINE ASTHE SHIP MADE ITS WAY ACROSS THE TOP OF HERVEY BAY AND DOWNPAST FRASER ISLAND IN CALM CONDITIONS AND UNDER SUNNY SKIES.THE CREW ENJOYED SEVERAL WHALE SIGHTINGS WITH SOME COMING UPWITHIN 500 YARDS OF THE SHIP TO GIVE A GREAT DISPLAY.UNFORTUNATELY THE CALM CONDITIONS HAVE SEEN US MOTOR FOR MOST OF THE DAY ALTHOUGH WE WERE ABLE TO SET SAIL DURING THE AFTERNOON AND PRACTICE TACKING AND WEARING THE SHIP IN PREPARATION FOR THE YOUTH CREW TAKING COMMAND OF THE SHIP IN A FEW SHORT DAYS. IN A BUSY DAY, WE ALSO MANAGED ANOTHER LECTURE ON SAIL THEORY AND SOME EXERCISES DESIGNED TO ENHANCE TEAMWORK AND COMMUNICATION. IT IS VERY EXCITING TO WATCH THE WAY THE CREW HAVE COME TOGETHER AND THEY ARE STARTING TO TAKE OVER MORE OF THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR SAIL HANDLING AND NAVIGATION DURING THEIR WATCHES.MOST ARE NOW COMPETENT CLIMBERS AND CAN WORK QUICKLY AND EFFECTIVELY ALOFT. TOMORROW WE INTEND TO ANCHOR OFF MOOLOOLABA AND HEAD SHORE FOR SOME SPORT AND A LEG STRETCH. THEN THE YOUTH CREW WILL ELECT THEIR OWN TEAM FOR COMMAND DAY WHEE THEY WILL BVE RESPONSIBLE FOR SAILING, NAVIGATING, COOKING AND RUNNING THE SHIP FOR 24 HRS STARTING ON TUESDAY. THERE IS SOME TALENT EMERGING IN THE VARIOUS POSITIONS AVAILABLE AND THE CREW ARE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE.LAST NIGHT I MENTIONED THAT BREAKSEA SPIT IS AT THE TOP END OFMORETON ISLAND, IT IS ACTUALLY FRASER ISLAND. JUST AS WELL THAT THEYOUTH CREW ARE FAST LEARNING TO NAVIGATE.YOURS AYEMATT MONCRIEFFCOMMANDER, RANCAPTAIN STS YOUNG ENDEAVOUR

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
