Captain's Log

Motoring, Bay of Plenty

Ahoy Shipmates, Welcome to today’s log – we are at sea (still) motoring into a headwind to anchor at Mercury Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula. To tell you about her trip so far, here is Liz:Hi Everyone,Well today was a fairly relaxed day as we made our way up the coast. The weather started out ratty but quickly cleared to another gorgeous day.Tension is starting to build as we prepare for our command day that starts at midday tomorrow. The captain tested all watches on their ability to safely conduct evolutions which we all were relieved to get through and pass safely. But the main highlight of today was passing White Island which is an active volcano off the coast of NZ. The smell was something I would not want to experience on a regular basis being a mix of sulphur and rotten eggs. But it was an awesome sight seeing the isalnd and the fact that there is an entire colony of gannets living on the outer end of the island quite happily was a bit of a surprise! So far the journey has had far more ups than downs and we intend for it to stay like that. Sea sickness has been combated and spirits are high. The possibly of being involved in a search and rescue was a definite highlight but thankfully (for the other ship) we werent needed after all.Wish us luck for command day and we will be back to terra firma sometime soon!Bye.Well team, tomorrow is the big day – Command Day. We will be having our elections tonight before we go to anchor, and the two command teams will be able to begin their planning in earnest. Tomorrow night the log will be by the Captain for the day, whoever that will be….Yours AyeChrisChris GallowayCommander, RANCommanding Officer
