Morning Brief Hilarity

Situation at 20:00- Last night at anchor was quiet and eventful. The Youth Crew kept watch, ensuring the Ship didn’t drag her anchor.At 06:30 all hands were called on deck for early morning activity. After an easy jog around the upperdeck, XO Chooka led usthrough some activities designed to start the blood circulating.At 08:00 all hands mustered a’midships for the ceremony of colours and the singing of the national anthem. As soon as colours was completed,all hands closed up for weighing anchor. By 08:30 the Ship was underway and slowly sailing Northwards. At today’s morning brief,Salty Sea Dog Lukish had an especially hilarious explanation of a commonly heard nautical expression. He described the origins of the saying ‘Two-Six….Heave’. This involved a naval battle, tropicalfruit and a climbing harness. Well done Cas. Happy Hour was followed by morning tea. The last half of the forenoon was taken up withanother installment of rope races and finally the communications exercise. This involved five groups of the Youth Crew attempting to communicate through different mediums, and proved to highlight theimportance of effective communications when working in a small team.After lunch, Captain John introduced an amazing video for the Youth Crew to watch. It involves the only known footage of a square-rigger rounding Cape Horn and was shot in 1929. Following the video, the Zuccini Brothers coordinated the Youth Crew through deck olympics, which was huge fun. This was immediately followed by a visit from Brother Nuncie. Brother Nuncie is a famous eastern wind mystic who visits the Ship from time to time. His arrival alwayscooincides with a lack of wind and results in the entire Youth Crew being levitated as one. For the final activity of the day, XO Chooka briefed the Youth Crew on how to sail the Ship to and from an anchorage. They were assigned the task of developing a plan to carry out this evolution, which they then presented. Tonight the Youth Crew are completing the major teamwork exercise of the voyage. As a watch, they will be required to complete a relatively complex task with no help from the Staff. The aim is for them to employ the lessons they have been taught in teamwork,tolerance and communications.YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Fact File: The Ship is equipped with two bronze saluting cannons. They were cast at trhe Royal OrdinanceFactory in Nottingham, England and fire blank 12 gauge shotgun shells. They are used for ceremonial occasions and for fighting offevil Pirate Ships. YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Glossary: Knot- The unit of spped at sea, where one knot is equal to one nautical mile per hour. So named afterthe origional log line used for measuring a vessel’s speed where measured lengths were marked off by knots tied in a line. Shroud- Asupporting rope or wire from the head of a mast to the sides of a vessel.Thought of the Day: One thing I know, the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found howto serve.
