Learning the Ropes

Hi Everyone, Welcome to Day 2 of the voyage. Following a good nights sleep the Youth Crew were awake and on deck for an early morning activity at 0630. On completion it was straight to the showers followed by a big YE breakfast. At 0800 the YC were introduced to the ceremony of colours (raise flags and sing National Anthem) then morning brief followed by Happy Hour’ (cleaning stations). Once completed, Taff the Bosun provided a detailed safety equipment brief then it was deck safety then lunch to finish off the mornings activities. Once lunch was finished everyone was back on deck familiarizing themselves with the sails and the many lines that we have onboard. As it was a warm afternoon I decided to let everyone enjoy a refreshing swim prior to weighing anchor. At 15:00 the anchor was weighed and the ship proceeded out of Horseshoe Bay into a moderate south easterly breeze. Given these perfect conditions we immediately set sail and shaped a course to the north east. Under the guidance of their watch leaders, the YC spent the rest of the afternoon setting all of the fore and aft sails and learning the intricacies of tall ship sailing. By late afternoon they had managed to set most sails and had successfully completed their first set of tacks (put bow through the wind) as a crew. The time is now 2130 and all of the YC have now settled into their watches for the night. In a light to moderate south east wind we are continuing to make steady progress towards the outer reef. Until Tomorrow, take care.Yours AyeCaptain Gav
