STS Young Endeavour in Brisbane
On Sunday 17th of September, STS Young Endeavour welcomed 250 visitors onboard for an open ship at Dockside Marina, Brisbane.
The guests were greeted by the Navy staff crew and youth ambassadors who gave a glimpse into what a voyage onboard the Young Endeavour holds.
The deck was crowded with excited alumni taking a trip down memory lane, family and friends, passerbys and prospective youthies.
Youth ambassadors Thor and Tammy expressed their gratitude for being able to come back on board, even just for an afternoon.
“I’m excited to relive the memories and allow people to have a snippet of the experience we had, and encourage them to join the experience of a lifetime,” said Thor.
Tammy shared the sentiment adding, "I came back today because it’s home, and I’ve missed being on the ship.”
Alumni shared stories, photos and brought along their uniforms while taking the opportunity to tell their children, grand-children, nieces and nephews about their voyage, which for some was over thirty years ago.
Louise who sailed onboard the Young Endeavour in 2002 reflected on how the experience impacted her life.
“It is a privilege to bring my three girls here today…They asked me why I went on the trip, and I said I needed direction".
“It gave me direction, a focus, and belief in myself to do what I wanted to do".
“It was life-changing,” she stated.
Alumni Paul, was a Navy cadet and came onboard when Their Royal Highnesses, Prince and Princess of Wales handed the ship over as gift for the Australian Bicentenary in 1988.
“I sailed on her in 1993 and the highlight was being in Circular Quay for the Sydney Olympics announcement.
“It is great to come back today and see she is still in a top condition which is a testament to the staff and youth crew who work so hard,” said Paul.
Applications for 2024 voyages are now open to youth aged between 16-23 who are looking for a challenging and life-changing adventure.
