FINAL NIGHT OF VOYAGE

Hi Everyone,The weather improved overnight and it was an overcast but fine morning that greeted the Crew of Young Endeavour this morning. On completion of breakfast and morning brief it was straight into a deck wash down and cleaning stations in preparation for the arrival of our Half Day Sail guests. At 0945 guests embarked from the Australian Signing Choir, prospective community sponsors and a number of family and friends. Following a short welcome and safety brief the ship slipped and commenced a three hour cruise within the confines of Newcastle Harbour. All of our guests had a wonderful day and thoroughly enjoyed the whole Young Endeavour Experience. The Youth Crew also had a great day and acted as the perfect hosts. The ship returned alongside at Queens Wharf at 1300 and following a brief farewell our guests disembarked. After a short break we embarked stores for the next voyage then lay aloft to put harbour furls on all of the square sails. On completion of these furls the Youth Crew lay below and conducted ‘end of voyage talks’. Due to the limited number of safe anchorages available in Newcastle Harbour I have decided to remain alongside at Queens Wharf for the final night of the voyage. This evening we held the final teak deck BBQ for the voyage which was followed by a slide show on deck which gave everyone the opportunity to reflect on the past 11 days. The rest of the evening was spent with the Youth Crew completing end of voyage questionnaires and “letters to themselves”, which are returned to each Youth Crew member six months after voyage completion. Whilst the Youth Crew were completing these final administration tasks the Staff Crew took the opportunity to conduct their “end of voyage” debriefs. At 0900 tomorrow, Young Endeavour will depart her berth at Queens Wharf, transit the short distance out into Newcastle Harbour before returning to her berth with her yards fully manned at 1000 were we expect to be met by a large group of family and friends. Following a brief ceremony we will say our final farewell to the Youth Crew of Voyage 01/10.This completes the first voyage of Young Endeavours 2010 program. The ship will remain in Newcastle until Sunday 17 January when we will embark our new Youth Crew for Voyage 2-10, which is from Newcastle to Sydney. During our stay in Newcastle the Ship will be open to the general public on Saturday 16 January from 1300 – 1600.Until next our next voyage, take care.Yours AyeCaptain GavÂ

Ahoy followers of our Young Endeavour journey! Command Day. We made it.
The beautiful weather at our anchor point at Jervis Bay made for a spectacular day under the command of our fellow Youth Crew! A morning stretch and some wise words from the Ship Crew gave Captain Waz and the team a step in the right direction.
With the new watches all set and ready to go, Captain’s Setting and Furling gave all our youthies the chance to prove their abilities on the high seas. Strong performances from all three watches; Sharkies, Chompers and Narwhals!!
Morning brief gave the Sailmaster a chance to give us the daily orders and help get everyone on the same page. With the staff crew getting ready for a holiday and giving us the ship, floral shirts and party music filled the deck and, with some final preparations, the ship was ours.
The Captain was given a small but very significant envelope that contained the essential, non-essential and completely optional tasks to be done over the course of the next 24 hours. 2 tacks were to be made at a minimum before leaving the bay and safety checks were the essential tasks to start our journey. However.
More amusing, optional tasks allowed some of our youthies to become part of the “Beach Assault Team” while others were put to the task of making a slideshow of the voyage, tying all the knots on the list, etc. These were some activities that bided the time for our incredible navigator - Ruscoe to set out a plan and work together with the Sailmaster - Hugh to create a sail plan.
Tacking stations were the focus for our late afternoon, preparing to weigh anchor and leave such a beautiful bay, for our last stretch of this incredible voyage.
Happy Birthday to the Capitan, Warwick, who turned 24 today! The wonderful MasterChef’s created a “cherry ripe” cake out of rice crispies, coconut, chocolate, and love. With a beautiful ceremony to end our day.
Sailing into the night leaves us the ability to see the lights from our destination. Sydney, here we come!
Wish us luck! From Nat and Tom!!
