Day 3 – Bass Strait
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to day 3 of our voyage. As expected, the weather in Bass Strait continued to deteriorate overnight with the wind consistently over 30kts and the swell rising to 4m which was extremely challenging for our young mariners and even the Staffy’s found it tough going. That said, we all battled through the night with the knowledge that the conditions would improve. By morning brief, we were located 20nm to the WNW of Wilson’s Promontory sailing under fore & aft sails and the topsail making a good speed of 7kts but still battling large seas.
Given these conditions, and the lack of sleep experienced by all overnight we decided to stand everyone down for a few hours so that they could try and get some much-needed sleep. By 1300 the weather had improved considerably so we got everyone up on deck and conducted our first round of competitive/non-competitive Rope Races with White Watch being the standout watch for today. Once completed, we rounded Wilson’s Promontory, handed in fore & aft sails then set all 3 squares as we shaped a new course for Point Hicks.
The time is now 2000 and the weather has improved considerably, and we are currently enjoying some pleasant downwind sailing with most off our young mariners having overcome the ‘Sailors Curse’ (seasickness) and now enjoying the experience of sailing this wonderful ship. Overnight the Youth Crew will continue to learn how sail the ship as we continue to make good speed under sail along Victoria’s SE coast.
Until tomorrow, take care.
Captain Gav

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
