Day 2 – First Climbs Fun!
Ahoy there landlubbers and armchair sailors! Welcome to the Captain’s Log for Day 2!
Sail Master Charlotte woke the ship up bright and early with some inspiration from the soundtrack of Moana. Braving the cool morning air our Youthies emerged on deck for an introduction to Early Morning Activity. After a wander around the upper decks and a quick game, it was time to head below for breakfast and morning ablutions.
At 0800 we conducted the Navy “Colours” ceremony before cracking straight into the program for the day. For the forenoon we broke into our watches to conduct Deck Safety, Full Value Contracts, and the moment we’ve all been waiting for… First Climbs! Though some were excited, and some were apprehensive to attempt the climb to the Topgallant, I can proudly report that all our brave Youthies made it off the deck!
Once all our Youthies were safely back on deck it was time for lunch. Chef Ash and her Master Chefs had cooked up a storm with Pasta Bake, Baked Ham and Terriyaki Salmon with noodles on offer.
After lunch the Staffies weighed anchor and left our Snug harbour behind. But on the way out Captain Libby had a surprise in store for Nav Trev and the Youthies, sending Man Overboard Dummy “Oscar” over the side. Nav Trev expertly drove the ship into position so Watch Officer Kyle could swim to the rescue then, all the Youthies helped on deck 2, 6, heave-ing Oscar to safety.
Once back on track and sailing through Storm Bay, Engineer Nobby gathered everyone for Rope Races Round One! Afterwards the Youthies set about putting their newfound skills into practice setting and furling the Fore, Main and Topgallant Staysails.
With the swell slowly growing the Youthies battled through one last brief before dinner with Sail Master Charlotte delivering the Square Sails Brief so they can be used overnight.
After dinner our Youthies settled into their sea routine where they will stand 4 hour watches overnight learning to keep a lookout, steer the ship and conduct rounds.
Tune in tomorrow to see how they went! Captain Libby+

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
