Day 10 – Australia Day

Hi everyone, welcome to Day 10 of our voyage. Happy Australia Day! The Youth Crew awoke to an extremely warm morning with the temperature expected to hit 38 degrees which is a bit of a scorcher. Following the normal morning routine of an early morning activity, breakfast and another informative morning brief we all gathered on deck and welcomed a number of guests including family on board to enjoy the activities on Sydney Harbour for Australia Day.

At just after 1000 we let go our lines and once out in the Harbour set sail then enjoyed a pleasant sail down to Bradley’s Head before turning around and making our way back to Sydney Cove where we participated in the Parade of Vessels which included a 21 Gun Salute and an impressive fly-past by the RAAF Roulettes. One this activity was complete we made our way back to Bradley’s Head where we again put the ship under sail and participated in the Australia Day Tall Ship Race which had to be modified this year because of strong headwinds. Needless to say, in normal conditions when only using sail we would have won this event but this year we agreed to slow down and let one of the other ships get their name on the trophy home.

With this event completed we headed back to HMAS Waterhen where we farewelled our guests then proceeded ashore to conduct End of Voyage Chats. Once everyone had returned on board Kyle gave a quick brief on how to do a harbour furl (very need furl of a square sail) then the Youth Crew lay aloft and completed this task.

By 1800 everyone was safely back on deck and this way just in time for Chef Steve to bring out his legendary pizza’s which we all enjoyed eating up on deck. Finally, to complete this wonderful meal we brought out a chocolate birthday cake and celebrated Young Endeavour’s 36th Birthday.

Later this evening we completed all of our end of voyage administration requirements then again mustered up deck for to listen to a sea shanty which had been written by the Youth Crew which was followed by the very popular slide show of photos taken throughout the voyage which gave us are chance to reflect on how special this voyage has been.

To finish of the evening’s activities, the Youth Crew and Watch Leaders walked up to the Ball’s Head Reserve where they enjoyed watching the Australia Day Sydney Harbour fireworks display. Once back on board we surprised everyone with a special chocolate birthday cake to celebrate Young Endeavour’s 36th Birthday.

The time is now 2200 and the Youth Crew have just settled into their final night watches for this voyage.

Until Tomorrow, take care.
Captain Gav.
