Day Ten – Departed Turtle Bay

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Day 10 of our voyage. It was a clear but cold morning that greeted the Youth Crew when they mustered on deck at 0630 this morning for an early morning activity.
Following breakfast they were ferried ashore to the beach at Turtle Bay where they enjoyed exploring some of the island, playing some beach sports and for those brave enough to venture into the extremely cold water a quick swim or a snorkel amongst the spectacular coral.
By 1130 we had everyone safely back onboard and following lunch we recovered the ships RHIB, weighed anchor then departed Turtle Bay. Once clear of Turtle Bay we altered course to the south and transited through the narrow Goss Passage. As we passed through this passage James the Navigator gave an in formative presentation on the Dutch East India Company Ship ‘Batavia’ which was shipwrecked on a reef back in 1629 near Beacon Island which is located within sight of Goss Passage. Once clear of Goss Passage and in open water we closed the ship up at tacking stations and in favourable conditions completed a good set of Demonstrational Tacks. This is the last sailing activity before Command Day and allows the Youth Crew to come to the bridge to observe what we do when we tack or wear ship.
Once completed we gave the Youth Crew a short break before conducting the Command Day Brief which was followed by dinner then Command Day elections. By sunset this evening we were located 14nm to the west of Geraldton motor sailing in moderate to strong SSE winds.

Overnight night the Youth Crew will continue to fine tune their navigation and sailing skills in preparation for tomorrows commencement of Command Day as we continue to make best speed south along the Western Australian Coast.

Until tomorrow, take care.

Yours Aye

Captain Gav
