Day One – Voyage 07/16 Underway
Welcome to Young Endeavours seventh voyage for 2016 and the first of our voyages for the 2016 Circumnavigation of Australia. Following a six week maintenance period the ship is back looking like new and we are all excited about meeting new Youth Crew from all over Australia and sailing around this beautiful country. This voyage will see us spend the next 11 days sailing from Sydney to Newcastle which isn’t that far but along the way we will have plenty of time to explore some of the spectacular NSW coast.
The Young Endeavour Staff Crew for this voyage are as follows:
Captain – Gav
Sail Master – Matt
Navigator – Evan
BOATSO – Taffy
Red Watch Leader – Kyle
White Watch Leader – Kenny
Blue Watch Leader – Marcos
Chef – Keely
Engineers – Horto & Danny
The voyage commenced at 1500 today when the new Youth Crew joined Young Endeavour berthed at Garden Islands Fleet Base East Berth No 3. Once all gear had been stowed, everyone mustered on deck for my welcome address followed by Staff Crew introductions. On completion we farewelled family and friends then got straight into a safety brief prior to our departure. At 1600 lines were cast-off and we transited the short distance across the harbour to the picturesque Athol Bay coming safely to anchor at 1620. Once at anchor the Watch Leaders conducted some ‘ice breaker activities’ and ships tours.
Dinner followed and it was the Youth Crews first introduction to wonderful food served onboard Young Endeavour. This is the first voyage in the galley for our newest Staff Crew member Keely who is an amazing Navy Chef and she really produced a wonderful dinner this evening impressing all of us with her culinary skills. On the menu was Roast Lamb with Thyme & Red Wine Gravy, Chicken Satay with Pilaf Rice and Vegetarian Lasagne with Egg plant and Spinach. This was followed with a desert of Chocolate Brownie with Warm Chocolate Sauce, Ice Cream and fresh Fruit Salad, what a feast!!
Following dinner both Matt the Sail Master and myself sat down with the Youth Crew and gave them a brief on the voyage program then discussed our expectations for the next 11 days. Once completed it was straight into a safety aloft brief and a demonstration on how to climb the foremast prior to the commencement of first night climbs.
The time is now 2250 and we have just finished first night climbs which means that we have successfully completed all of the first day activities and can now enjoy a hot cup of cocoa before turning in for a well deserved good nights sleep
Given the current weather forecast it is our intention to remain at anchor here in Athol Bay overnight then weigh anchor early tomorrow afternoon, conduct our pilotage out of Sydney Harbour then shape a course to the south and start making our way down the South Coast of NSW to the picturesque Jervis Bay, which is currently planed to be our next anchorage.
Until tomorrow evening, take care.
Currently at anchor in Sydney Harbours Athol Bay and experiencing light 5-7kt NNE winds with nil swell. The current temperature is 17 degrees.
