Day One – Voyage 05-16 Underway

Hi Everyone,Welcome to Young Endeavours fifth voyage for 2016. This voyage will see us spend the next 11 days sailing from Melbourne to Sydney and along the way experiencing some of the spectacular Victorian and NSW coastlines. This voyage will also see us finally return to Sydney after being away for nearly 15 months which will be special for all of us that sailed the ship throughout the 2015 World Voyage. The YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Staff Crew for this voyage are as follows:Captain – GavSail Master – KennyNavigator – KyleBOATSO – TaffRed Watch Leader – EvanWhite Watch Leader – AdamBlue Watch Leader – BradChef – JenkoEngineer – SumoThe voyage commenced at 1500 today when the new Youth Crew joined Young Endeavour berthed at Workshop Pier, Williamstown Melbourne. Once all gear had been stowed, everyone mustered on deck for my welcome address followed by Staff Crew introductions. With these formalities complete we farewelled family and friends then got straight into some ship tours and a safety brief prior to our departure. Our normal 1600 departure was delayed by 30 minutes due to the late arrival of one of the Youth Crew whose plane had run late. At 1630 we cast-off lines then transited the short distance over to Hobson’s Bay where we came safely to anchor at 1645. Once at anchor the Watch Leaders completed some ‘ice breaker’ activities then it was time for dinner.Chef Jenko again excelled with tonight’s menu consisting of Pork Ribs, Steak with a Mushroom Sauce and Vegetarian Fried Rice all served with Fresh Vegetables then followed with a mixture of deserts which included Apple Crumble, Fresh Fruit Salad and Ice Cream. Once we had cleaned up from dinner, I had a bit of chat to the Youth Crew about what their voyage would entail during the next eleven days.On completion, Kenny, as Sail Master, gave his talk about some of the rules, regulations and safety aspects of Young Endeavour before giving a safety aloft brief and a demonstration on how to climb the foremast. Once he had finished this demonstration I inverted all of the Youth Crew in their harnesses, which is our final safety check prior to commencing our first climbs. The time is now 2330 and I am pleased to announce that first night climbs are now complete with everyone making it to the topgalland yard. This completes today’s program and after a hot cup of cocoa the crew will now turn in for their first nights sleep onboard Young Endeavour.Tomorrow we will depart our anchorage, conduct our pilotage out of Port Phillip Bay and into Bass Strait then commence our passage to Sydney.Until tomorrow, take care. Yours AyeCaptain Gav
