Day One – Setting Sail

Hi there Landlubbers,

Thanks for the great farewell from windy Stanley this afternoon. It was great to see so many families, friends and loved-ones there to wish us Bon Voyage. With the wind behind us we motored from Stanley hugging the beautiful coastline of northern Tasmania conducting some safety briefs and undertaking a more comprehensive tour of the Ship. We spoke about our reasons for being on board and what we wanted to achieve. After the Youth Crew (reluctantly) handed-in their mobile phones (oh no – end of civilisation) we did some dolphin watching (oh so cute …) before proceeding to anchor in the lee of Table Cape where we have been practicing some sail handling in relatively benign conditions. We will remain at anchor overnight getting to know each other some more.

From a big-picture perspective, we have looked at the overall weather pattern and determined we would take a generally east-about track to Geelong. Now that may seem a little strange because our destination is to the north. But as a square-rigged Ship we want the wind from behind us so we will do a cicular approach to Port Phillip Bay and ultimately Geelong by going along the northern Tasmanian coastline then over to Flinders Island and Deal Island depending on the exact weather at the time before making towards the Victorian coast – the Twelve Apostiles, Westernport and the like are all possible playgrounds for us in the coming days.

Will update you again tomorrow and until then take care.
