Day 9 – Final Night Of Voyage
Hi Everyone,                 Welcome to Day 9 of our voyage. A well rested crew awoke to a fine but extremely cold morning. Following breakfast and a very short morning brief the Youth Crew turned to at ‘Happy Hour’ (cleaning stations) while the ships boat proceeded ashore to pickup Ms Jennifer Reilly from the Young Endeavour Youth Scheme and members of a Film Production Company who were joining us for the day to take footage of the ship and the Youth Crew for the advertising campaign for next years voyages. With the film crew safely onboard the anchor was weighed at 1000 and we departed Broken Bay under all three square sails. Once in open water, in near perfect sailing conditions, the ship was brought under a full press of sail for the first time for this voyage, which really does look impressive. At 1300 we were joined by a Navy Helicopter from 723 Squadron who had been tasked with taking aerial footage of the ship under full sail. With this task complete we shaped a new course for Sydney Heads and then battled a strong 20-25kt westerly for the next three hours to finally make our entry into Sydney Harbour at 1810. Once in the harbour the Youth Crew proceeded aloft to put sea furls on all three squares and while this was occurring Ships Staff brought the ship safely to anchor in the picturesque Athol Bay. This evening we enjoyed a BBQ dinner which regrettably had to be cooked in the galley and held in the ships café due to the cool weather and our late anchorage. The rest of the evening will be spent with the Youth Crew completing end of voyage questionnaires and “letters to themselvesâ€, which are returned to each Youth Crew member six months after voyage completion. Whilst the Youth Crew are completing these final administration tasks the Staff Crew will take the opportunity to conduct the ‘end of voyage’ debriefs.Tomorrow morning following breakfast and morning brief we will depart our anchorage at Athol Bay and proceed up the harbour under the Harbour Bridge, then with the Youth Crew manning the yards come back down the harbour and berth at Fleet Base East 5A at 1000.                                        Once alongside family and friends will be invited onboard for a tour of the ship and to witness my final address and the presentation of Certificates of Achievement to all of the Youth Crew. Following this presentation we will say our final emotional farewell to the Youth Crew of Voyage 14/14 as they depart the ship. On a personal note, I would like to congratulate the Youth Crew of Voyage 14/14 for the effort that you have put in throughout this voyage. You have sailed over 1000nm in 9 days (mostly against the prevailing conditions) and have been a wonderful crew to have onboard and I wish all of you all the very best for the future. Young Endeavour will now go into a maintenance period until the end of November 2014 so that we can get her ready for her next exciting voyages. Until Next Voyage, take care.                                                                  Yours Aye                                                                                             Captain Gav

Thank you Tarvi, Kaeden and Matt for your narrative of today's events. Intentions are to remain at anchor in Hunters Bay, just off HMAS Penguin, home of the RAN Diving School, a place close to my heart, having spent many a day there under training as a young Officer! The plan is to weigh anchor and proceed to HMAS Waterhen, in Waverton, to pick up our Community Day Sailors from the Windgap Foundation and take them for a sail around the harbour for 3 hours. The Youth Crew will help us host our visitors and give them an experience of Young Endeavour. We will drop them back to Waverton and then proceed to anchor in the harbour where we will have a good view of the Bridge and the Opera House for the Youth Crew's last night onboard. Until tomorrow. Yours Aye, Captain Mike
