Day 8 – V06/26, Sydney to Sydney
Command day has finaly come! After voting on our leadership team last night we are happy to announce our Captain for command day; Jakob. Aiding in his efforts is our Sail master, Xanthe and our Navigators Landon and Tom. Finally, rounding out our leadership team, are our watch leaders Yasmin, Rohan and Evana, and our Master chefs Ethan, Chloe and Logan. We wish them all luck and are confident that we will make it to our destination timely and safely.
We started the morning going over setting and furling of the fore staysail and main staysail within each of our new watch groups, re-familiarising ourselves with our positions and each other as a team.
After a wonderful lunch of chicken parma’s and steak’s, we found ourselves refurbished, refuelled, and ready to go. We went around the ship, completing an immaculate safety briefing run by our new watch leaders, followed by our first task completed; getting a photo of all the Youthies laying aloft on the foremast (“I made it onto the Topgallant yard!” -Archie).
Favourable winds will hopefully aid us in the downwind, Northern run to Sydney. We look forward to putting into practice our drills hard work.
See you in three days, fair thee well!

Xanthe: 24 hours ago, Command day began. Starting this voyage on the Young Endeavour, most of my shipmates and I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into- having to sail this ship for 24 hours, by ourselves with no help from the staffies other than a sheet of paper with a few instructions. How scary but so so cool. By the time command day came around, we were ready. Butterflies in our stomach fluttered, our heartbeats pounded, but after 7 days together, we all felt very confident in ourselves and each other. I would say my favourite part would be when we set all of our square sails and were absolutely flying with the downwind. As Sailmaster, I remember looking to my Navigators and feeling this absolute sense of pride and happiness but also relief in all of our hard work. Now that command day is over, I almost feel a bit sad, knowing that that was probably the first and last time I would be able to do something that cool and exhilarating with some amazing young people.
Jakob: Command day has been by far my favourite day of the voyage, not only was I the Captain of the first and best tall ship I have ever been on, but I had the chance to sail all the way from Fingal Bay to Sydney with a very trustworthy crew. The day started at anchor, doing fun activities like getting a photo of the whole youth crew aloft. We then had an amazing steak for dinner from our new chefs and created a sail plan to get back to Sydney with our Navigator and Sailmaster. When I could see the Sydney heads, I knew our crew had succeeded. One thing that I am especially proud of was setting our course square sail, this had never been done with our watch leaders, but with a blink of an eye it was already up, taking us downwind, south towards Sydney.
