Day 8 – V05/26, Sydney to Sydney

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to Day 8 of our Voyage and Command Day. As expected, it has been a day full of activities and new experiences for our Youth Crew as they take on the responsibility of running this beautiful Ship for a 24hr period. So far, they have completed a number of their tasks and have now prepared a navigation and sail plan in preparation for sailing later this evening and getting us safely to Sydney. That’s enough from me I will now hand over to Captain Savannah and Noah who will update you on their day.

This is your Captain, Sav, writing this update for you today!

Welcome to Day 8 of our voyage, AKA Command Day. After a calm night anchored in Broken Bay, our Youthies were woken to a beautiful sunrise and a jam-packed day that lay ahead. Our early morning activity had the crew being ferried ashore to the cosy town of Patonga, where we played Capture the Flag, jumped off the jetty, scored a coffee at the local café and then had a nice walk (or run) along the beach before returning to the Ship for lunch and our Command Day handover.

I will now hand-over to Noza (Noah) who will tell you a little more about our day.

Hi Everyone, it’s Noza.

Today we stayed in Broken Bay, which is a beautiful bay just north of Sydney on the Hawkesbury River. Broken Bay is extremely scenic with spectacular hills and lots of hidden bays and most of it is surrounded by National Parks. Today we woke up to a beautiful sunrise which was a pleasant surprise following several cloudy and rainy days. This morning, we headed into the small town of Patonga, where we played a game of capture the flag on the cricket pitch, which ended with a number of us being sweaty and muddy Sailors. On completion we were given the opportunity to go to the local café or head over to the jetty for a swim and to do some flips, which of course included big Noz.

At 0930 we were again ferried back to the Ship [Young Endeavour] where we had showers and lunch (a chicken parmi) thanks Kingy! At 1300 we had the Captain’s handover, where we, the Youthies, took over the ship.

The time is 1800, and our Youthie Command Team is currently planning our navigation and sail plan, while everyone else is getting ready to have dinner cooked by our amazing Youthie Chefs before we sail tonight.

Ahoy there readers of the V07/26 Captain’s Log! Day 7 has arrived with a crisp fog as we sailed into Broken Bay in the early morning. Last night during watches we commenced a practice for command day called ‘’bear-ex.’ This involved doing 11 challenges strengthening our teamwork, communication and knowledge of handling sails. In the morning, after breakfast, we learned more about navigation with Benny to grow our practical skills on sailing through the high and low seas off New South Wales in preparation for our command day tomorrow. In regards to command day, we have polished off our practical knowledge and skills with other watch leaders who have different learning ideas and techniques to reach the whole cohort of Youthies. We finished the day with a celebration for one of the Youthie’s Birthday. It was a pretty special day celebrating Olive’s 18th onboard with cake and singing tonight. After the festivities, we determined the roles for command day with an election . A joke from our new sail master - “Why does the Norwegian Navy use QR codes on their ships? To (Scan-di-navi-an)”, We can’t wait to see what the challenges tomorrow will bring. - Sean’s sheep / Molly’s minions out

Ahoy there readers of the V07/26 voyage Captain's Log! Day 6 has arrived with glistening, calm waters and the magnificent view of Broughton island. We awoke to ‘danger zone’ and a quick game of Ubuntu before getting prepared to weigh anchor and set sail once again. However, before this we had snappy hour - a quick clean up of the ship after two days at the beach! We jumped right in to rules of the road with Jessie in preparation for command day, (our 24 hours of taking over the ship!) Then we moved straight into some sail theory with Captain Leups, bringing all that we have learnt so far together. We continued on with our action packed day, practicing tacking stations and learning what the other watches do. As well as getting to see the command team in action and all of the things they do whilst we are hauling on lines on deck. After, our favourite part of the day dinner, made by Kingy, we devoured a tender beef brisket and ravioli. It is truly amazing to see how well we have come together from strangers to a family in such a short time. We will finish off tonight by settling into our watches to keep the ship safe as sea overnight. Until tomorrow landlubbers!

Ahoy there, followers of voyage 07/26! Today the captains log is being written by Youthies. We sailed into day 5 of our journey with smooth waters, and a crew in good spirits. Overnight we improved and expanded on our sailing skills in our watches, where the Youthies practiced and learnt the sails of the ship. In the morning we awoke to ‘I got you’ by James Brown and enjoyed a great breakfast by our amazing chef Kingy. We saw a diverse range of sea life, with flying fish being spotted overnight, and a sighting of dolphins in the morning. In the mid morning we arrived at our destination, Broughton island. Broughton island is usually difficult to access, so we were lucky that we had the chance to visit as it is only accessible by boat. So with packed lunches we headed to the island. We spent the next few hours hiking around the island and enjoying its beautiful beaches in the warm weather. We returned that afternoon to the ship, with a delicious dinner. After which our watches battled in our favourite non-competitive (competitive) game of rope races. As evening fell, we up a projector and watched ‘Around Cape Horn’. It made us appreciate the comforts of modern sailing, and how perhaps our struggles weren’t so bad after all. That’s all for today, we are staying at anchor overnight and getting some rest before kicking off again tomorrow!
