Day 8 – At Anchor Point Sorrell

Hi Everyone, Firstly I would like to apologize for the delay in getting some of the Captains Logs out on the Young Endeavour website. This delay has been caused by a connectivity problem with our satellite communication system which we have not been able to rectify. Hopefully this problem will be identified and repaired whilst we are alongside in Devonport. As an interim solution I have been using a personal laptop with Next G capability when in range (not so good in the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait). At sunrise this morning we were located 40nm to the NE of Low Head still sailing close hauled on a port tack. Given the forecast for NE winds we decided to sail east to the mouth of Tamar River during the forenoon then tack ship, alter course to the SW, then run downwind under all three squares to our planned anchorage at Point Sorell. By doing this we would give the Youth Crew the opportunity to sail the ship under square sails which was something that we had not been able to achieve so far this voyage. During this passage I conducted Captains setting and furling drills and am happy to announce that a very high standard was set by all of the watches with all being successful in passing this activity. At 1500 this afternoon all sail was handed in and we proceeded to anchor just to the east of Point Sorrell. Once at anchor I presented my Command Day brief which was followed by Command team elections later this evening. To complete the night’s activities everyone has now mustered in the ships caf for the screening of the classic tall ship movie Around Cape Horn’. On completion of this movie the Youth Crew will settle into their anchor watches for the night ensuring that everyone enjoys a good nights rest in preparation for the commencement of tomorrows Command Day.Until tomorrow, take care.Yours AyeCaptain Gav
