Day 7 – Sea to Rye

Ahoy there Shipmates,Overnight the ship continued motor-sailing towards the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, known as ‘the Rip’. The 20 knot SW wind meant we were able to achieve over 6 knots with just the Jib, Topgallant, Topsail, Course and Main Staysails set. After Wakey-Wakey Lindey and I conducted ‘Captain’s Setting and Furling’ which is an assessment of each watch to ensure they have achieved the competency at setting and furling the staysails required for them to proceed to Command Day. We were very happy with the standard achieved by all three watches. At 1000 we transited through the Rip under sail, anchoring at Rye at 1130. After lunch the youthies lay aloft to sea-furl the square sails. On completion we commenced transporting them ashore for a couple of hours of free time in Rye.Dinner was held on everyone’s return and was an upper deck BBQ, cooked by Haydo and ably assisted by Sam and Bainger. At 1900 I gave the youthies the Command Day brief and gave them their one hour to conduct their elections, the results of which follow:Captain – Jacob BaingerSail Master – Tiffany ChapmanNavigator – James MarsdenWatch Officers – Grace Collins, Graeme Searle and Samuel GoldthorpeWatch Leaders – Jack Bowden, Frank Gildea and Jessica SmithChefs – Alyce Shearn, Sarah Iwanuch and Tom McMurrayCongratulations to all those who have been elected by their fellow youth crew members to be in the formal leadership positions and good luck for tomorrow. It is intended to remain in our current anchorage overnight and I will hand over control of the Ship to Youth Crew Captain Bainger at 1300 tomorrow. At the same time I will give him a list of over 20 tasks to be completed by the youth crew between 1300 tomorrow and 1300 on Saturday, when he will hand the Ship back to me, hopefully in the same condition that I gave it to him!Until tomorrow, when you will hear from Youth Crew Captain Bainger instead of me,Yours AyeCaptain Mike     “
