Day 7 – Oberon Bay

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to Day 7 of our voyage. The Youth Crew awoke to beautiful Seal Cove morning with just a light cool southerly breeze. Following an early morning activity and breakfast we mustered the Youth Crew for morning brief where again they were enlightened by Salty’s nautical tales and some fun facts on where we have been and where we are going from Gemma our Navigator.
Cleaning stations followed then we informed the Youth Crew that we would delay the programmed morning’s activities so that they could enjoy a refreshing swim plus the use the ship’s very popular rope swing prior to our departure from Sealers Cove. By 1000 we had everyone out of the water and once we had recovered the ship’s RHIB we weighed anchor and in light south westerly conditions we headed back into a much calmer Bass Strait.
Early this afternoon we enjoyed another round of rope races and once we had rounded Wilson’s Promontory South Eastern point we brought the ship under fore and aft sail then in light conditions conducted a good set of Demonstrational Tacks – This activity gives the Youth Crew the Opportunity to come to the bridge to learn what we do when we tack or wear the ship. Once completed we gave the Youth Crew a short break then went straight into Captain Setting and Furling Drills with all watches passing this important activity.
Once completed we handed in all sail then proceeded safely to anchor in the very scenic Oberon Bay which is located on the western side of Wilson’s Promontory. Once at anchor we enjoyed a fantastic Mexican dinner which was followed by my Command Day Brief and Command Day Elections.
The time is now 2030 and to finish an extremely busy but enjoyable day the Youth Crew are now sitting down to watch the classic Tall Ship Movie ‘Around Cape Horn’ which no doubt they will compare with their own experience of sailing Bass Strait. Once the movie is finished we will settle into anchor watches overnight ensuring that everyone is well rested for what should be a challenging but enjoyable Command Day.
Until Tomorrow, take care
Yours aye

Dear readers,
STS Young Endeavour is, by the definition and origin of her name, about Aussie youths trying hard to achieve something difficult. This voyage certainly provided that... and then some. A challenging experience from all angles and areas. Yet the Youth Crew prevailed and found success. They should therefore be justifiably proud of themselves for persevering, seeing the silver lining and never wavering in their mission to have a great adventure. I am very proud of all of them and I'm sure you are too!
9 Days ago 23 Youth Crew from all over Australia, came together to sail this vessel, have fun and challenge themselves. They have not only done that, but have faced and overcome fears, and learnt a lot about themselves and each other.
They leave with new skills, improved persistence, resilience and adaptability, as well as generally knowing they are more capable than what they probably thought. And of course, having made great new friends - most probably, friends for life. It never gets old for us staff members, as we truly love our work.
Fair winds and following seas.
