Day 6 – Broken Bay

Ahoy there everyone,Welcome to day six, the morning commenced with another rousing tune from Sail Master Matt, when everyone mustered on deck at 0630, the rain had eased to only passing showers which assisted the completion of the early morning activity prior to breakfast, morning brief and happy hour. With the morning routine complete the ship departed our overnight anchorage at Cottage Point exiting Broken Bay and proceeding under a full press of sail into the Tasman Sea. Offshore the three metre swell and 30 knot winds challenged various members of the Youth Crew with maintaining their equilibrium especially when aloft. During the afternoon the ship conducted a series of demonstrational tacks. This enabled each Youth Crew member the opportunity to stand on the bridge and observe the command and control aspects as the ship was tacked through the wind. These set of tacks consolidated the sail theory and practical deck work instruction gained over the previous six days. Late afternoon the ship re-entered Broken Bay while Engineer Leon facilitated another round of rope races as the watches each attempted to be the first to locate the nominated items. All sail was then handed in as the ship proceeded to anchor in the lee of Flint and Steel Point. On completion of dinner a mini Olympics session was conducted on the upper decks to the delight of the participants and observers alike. To complete the evening a special movie was screened, depicting a young man who sailed around Cape Horn in 1929 on one of the last tall ship cargo vessels. Many similarities and comparisons could be drawn 80 years later with our own band of young adventurers. So after another very busy day, the Youth Crew have settled into anchor watches for the night. The intention is again remain at anchor overnight due to the prevailing weather conditions offshore and continue operating within the Broken Bay area. Until tomorrow evening, take care. Yours Aye Captain Damien
