20 Apr Day 5 – V06/25
Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline blared over the speakers rousing those not on watch get up out of their racks. From there we moved right into a walk around the upper decks. Kingy (our lovely chef), with the help of Dan ‘the man’ cooked a delicious Easter Morning barbeque breakfast. Hot cross buns, hash browns, fried eggs, bacon and delicious halloumi!
At morning brief our seasick friends were glad to hear the spewometer dial had moved down to ‘very low’! Still, we were warned not to rest on our laurels as the high UV index meant slip, slop, slap, sunscreen or fry, hydrate or die!
Cleaning the ship was made fun by party music and chats. Shout out to Bec for taking us through the complicated maritime laws and etiquette needed when meeting other ships on the sea.
Much to our surprise the Easter bunny can swim, and despite messing up our tidy bunks had hidden little easter eggs inside. We left anchor, had a nice lunch and a quick nap before moving into Rope Races! Walking quickly, not running, around the ship to help Dan the man locate all manner of lines, sheets and tacks. For a bonus round, we had to drop a hollow chocolate egg without breaking it. Sail Theory was next with an informative discussion about all things sailing and tacking from our Captain Tomo. We then dove into more some more tacking stations, with our watches rotating between the stations.
Working hard and sweating as we heaved on the lines in the hot sun. Many of the youthies climbed the foremast for arguably the best part of the day, watching the sunset from the platform and the course yard arm.
Ultimately, we all had a cracking Day 5 and are excited for what’s to come!
